United Way denies excluding new charities
Washington AP United Way of America rejects a longtime critic’s claim that local United Ways are shutting out new charities. The National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy says donations to United Way groups grow slower than to alternative charities and accuses United Ways of maintaining a workplace fundraising monopoly. United Way spokeswoman Tony De Cristofaro defends the policy noting environmental groups are not included, but many United Way agencies serve women and minority groups and half of clients are women. The committee cites inflation adjusted giving rising about 2 percent 1970–1990, versus a 54 percent rise in total U.S. private giving, while United Way figures place 2100 local United Ways up 17 percent over two decades.
