Indictments Return in Lorain County Embezzlement Case

Two indictments allege embezzlement by T. F. McDonald former secretary treasurer and manager of Port City Mortgage Co Lorain One charges 31000 taken May 10 1926 and the other 15000 taken December 14 1926 McDonald had earlier been bound over for embezzling 1640 Several other indictments listed include Sam Biroch carrying concealed weapons James Farmer breaking and entering a Lorain filling station Pete Nefratis and others in Lorain for burglaries William Allen stealing an auto James Fields damaging a jewelry store window and several burglaries and thefts in Lorain Arcadia and Elyria

Gunman killed by woman in Toledo field confrontation

In Toledo on November 21 an unidentified gunman was killed and his partner disarmed after Claude Craven of Silica fought off the bandits to protect his female companion Mrs. Ona Marti. Craven was seriously wounded. Mrs. Marti escaped in her car and cooperated with deputies.

Points of law in Elyria police pension dispute

The Ohio Court of Appeals heard mandamus petitions from Captain Fred C. Meyers and Mrs. Thomas Drage seeking pension payments. Lawyers agreed the case hinges on whether the July 28, 1930, action set a new pension rate and whether old pension rules remain in effect until new ones are created. Pensions have been denied 3 to 3 by the Police Pension Board.

Auto Tags To Go On Sale Dec 1 Lorain County

Automobile licenses for 1931 go on sale in Lorain county December 1 as announced by R. E. Hakes deputy commissioner of automobile licenses. He has not been informed of the exact date they may be used, a shift from prior practice. The 1931 tags are grey with black lettering and cover numbers 276-351 to 282-350, similar to 1930 ranges.

Secretary Baker Wins American Hebrew Medal for Christian Jewish Cooperation

Newton D. Baker of Cleveland Secretary of War in Wilson's cabinet has been awarded the American Hebrew medal for promoting better understanding between Christians and Jews in America. The 1930 award recognizes his chairmanship of the Protestant section of the national conference of Jews and Christians, announced by Rabbi Isaac Landman editor of The American Hebrew.

Recount Narrows Gap In 14th District Race

In Ohio's 14th district, Francis Seiberling gains 57 votes in Lorain Portage Medina and Summit recounts. Election-night totals had Seiberling ahead 16,642 to 14,027 in Lorain. new Lorain tally shows 16,598 for Seiberling and 13,961 for Harter. Summit adds four votes to Harter.

Wounds Fatal To Deer Hunter in Michigan Timberlands

Detroit hunter Verne Bennett died in Gaylord hospital after being shot twice in a forest clearing south of Lewiston. Police believe he was trailed into the woods and killed possibly by bandits during a deer hunt.

Sam Garbo of Camden Township was fined 10 dollars plus costs in Justice S J George's court for keeping his 10 year old son Anthony from school to work on the farm.

Mayor Hewitt Urges E H S Students To Be Good Sports

Elyria High School students heard Mayor James A. Hewitt urge all to be good sports for the Elyria Lorain football game. He pledged support for the team and urged courtesy to visitors from Lorain. Principal Shively and coaches praised cooperation and orderly conduct as band music and cheerleading yells accompanied the rally.

MacArthur Named Chief of Staff of U S Army

Douglas MacArthur, the nation’s youngest major general, was proclaimed chief of staff of the United States Army today and automatically became a full general. He took the oath before Secretary Hurley and top military leaders in the secretary’s flag draped office, affirming his duties.

Carnke and Ooutram Appointed Elyria Police Capt and Detective

F W Zarnke and C E Southam were named captain and detective of the Elyria police department by the director of public safety and service. They have held the posts on a temporary basis since last March after Captain Meyers took leave and then resigned. The permanent appointments are effective November 18.

Deputies and Police to Handle Ely Stadium Crowd

Elyria police led by Chief E B Stankard and 22 sheriff deputies from Clarence Adams office plan to manage a record crowd of 7200 expected at the Elyria-Lorain game tomorrow. Traffic control on main highways to Ely Stadium will be their focus.

Trial date set in Peerless Oil suit over Lorain death

Common Pleas officials announce a $100,000 suit filed by Mrs. W H Clark of Lorain against Peerless Oil Company over the death of her husband. The case names William May of Lorain as the driver of the automobile involved on Oberlin avenue near Eighth street. May had previously been convicted of manslaughter but was granted a new trial by Judge W B Thompson for alleged jury tampering. The new trial has not yet occurred.

County Health Commissioner Honored by Ohio Conference

Dr. H J Powell Bowling Green and Wood County health commissioner spoke at the annual Ohio health commissioners conference in Columbus. He said medical science is more important to modern civilization than steam or electricity and warned epidemics could decades reduce city populations without progress in medicine.

Elyria Woman Seriously Injured in Auto Crash

An Elyria woman, Mrs. August Groll, 29, was seriously injured when the stolen car driven by 11-year-old Clifford Cathey of Lorain crashed into a car driven by William Kuss of Elyria on Telegraph road near Elyria. Mrs Groll is at Elyria Memorial Hospital with severe leg lacerations and possible chest injuries. Kuss and his wife were treated for injuries. Cathey is under arrest, charged with stealing the auto he was driving.

Local Legion Men Headed to Columbus for Banquet and Events

A large Lorain county Legion delegation travels to Columbus for the Ohio American Legion Post Commander and Adjutants banquet and conference. Elyria leaders Edgar Herzog and Irving Kubic join from Avon Lake to represent posts and committees. A second Elyria group follows after a football game for a Saturday banquet with National Commander O Neil as guest and the unveiling of a World War veterans monument on the Capitol steps.

NEW LONDON Conn Nov 21 The speedboat Happy Parrot with three men aboard and about 400 sacks of liquor fled after gunfire shattered the pilot house. A coast guard vessel chased it eight miles from Block Island to Fisher's Island and captured it late last night. many shots were fired from the patrol boat's small gun.

DeMolay Degrees Conferried On Oberlin Boys In 15 Lineup

The David J Nye Chapter of DeMolay conferred degrees on a class of 15 boys, seven from Oberlin, at a 90 person meeting. Oberlin Masons and state officials attended. Charles Kafer praised the students at Lorain’s conclave. The chapter plans Thanksgiving baskets and a post‑Thanksgiving dance to fund them. The group now lists 145 members.

Elyria Community Chest workers announced subscriptions of 11504.94 at noon bringing total pledges to 73476.81, still about 24000 short of the 97050 goal. Industrial division led with 8460.65, followed by men’s teams 4823.50 and women’s teams 3572.44. school totals and company contributions highlighted by Universal Crane and Thew Shovel Company.
