USDA Heads To Act On Shady Wheat Dealings

Washington officials say they will expose individuals involved in shady international wheat dealings and push for tighter Canada wheat import rules. Up to 1,000,000 bushels of Canadian wheat reportedly exported with subsidies, violating regulations that subsidies apply only to shipments of American wheat or flour milled from U S wheat. A secret report on the practice is being prepared for the Justice Department amid hints of possible prosecutions of several government employees.

Kruse cites no evidence of Agriculture Department employees in wheat case

Kruse said no evidence links Agriculture Department employees to the wheat scheme, but any involved will be dealt with. Investigations found two exporters shipped 1,000,000 bushels of Canadian blended wheat with American wheat over last November to February. Amount moved under the subsidy program remains undetermined as another case probes a handler moving Canadian wheat into export position at U S ports. Normally low-grade Canadian wheat is domestic livestock feed with a lower duty and price than top grades for flour and bread.
