In Los Angeles a jury spared Angelo Buono Jr. from the death penalty for the Hillside Strangler murders, recommending life in prison without parole. The decision came after Buono’s partner received a life sentence, with jurors citing prolonged service and uncertainty about the punishment. Buono had been found guilty of killing nine young women ages 12 to 28, who were sexually assaulted before their bodies were dumped on local hillsides in 1977 and 1978.
