Should Smoking in the Movies Be Banned
Across the United States a Great American Smokeout on November 20 urges people to quit smoking. The piece cites 400,000 annual US deaths and 90 percent of new smokers being youths. It notes 24 state attorneys general pressuring film makers to curb smoking portrayals and cites a Dartmouth study linking movie smoking to higher youth uptake. Filmmakers agreed to a 1988 product placement ban, yet another study finds cigarette visibility in films has risen tenfold since.
