Ohio deer population rises amid hunting harvests

Rick Genochio, plant safety engineering manager, notes only two deer were taken on Nov 9 the hunt's first day. Cold, wet weather cut hunter numbers. Ohio's deer herd has grown from 17,000 in 1965 to over 500,000 today, with an estimated 145,000 to be killed during the Dec 2 weeklong gun season, plus about 20,000 by bow hunters and 25,000 in vehicle collisions. Biologist Mike Tonkovich recalls past goals to rein in the herd and the push by hunters to reduce doe permits. Most deer vehicle crashes occur before dawn or after dusk in November. Deer killed by motorists may be kept after presenting a receipt to the investigating officer.
