Pentagon classifies Beirut deaths as accidental anger grows

Senate Foreign Relations chair Sen. Charles H. Percy demands change after the Pentagon labels 30 Marines among 239 killed in the Oct 23 Beirut blast as accidental. Marine spokesman Capt. Jay Farrar says the wording was misapplied and later changed to death non battle. Percy cites President Reagan's remarks praising the sacrifices of the troops and urges kin to receive accurate casualty notices. The dispute stems from a clash over War Powers Act application to U S troops in Lebanon.
