Walton withdraws from Oklahoma trial amid tense courtroom clash

In Chamber Oklahoma on November 17 J C Walton announced he would withdraw with his attorneys from the trial after a brief talk with Mrs Walton. The session grew tense as defense withdrawal prompted pro tem Tom Anglin to call a recess and guard a risk of riot outside the court.

War Vet Johnson Summoned for R. A. F. Service

John Johnson a war veteran and member of the G A R died after weeks of illness at his home 246 Tree Street. Survived by wife and several relatives including Fiora Edward Albert at home and Mrs Cassie Richards. Funeral at noon at Christ Church with East Side interment to follow. Fraternal messages to President Coolidge and ministers noted.

France withholds debts until Germany pays

Washington officials reacted to Poincare warning France will not repay debts until money is received from Germany. The U S insists France borrowed from the United States not Germany and payment is due to France, not Berlin. Three Birmingham Men Charged With Drink Crimes

Shortt Underhill and A M Handy, Earl and Frank Adams of Birmingham were in court. Handy faced a charge of operating an automobile while intoxicated and was fined £40 plus costs. Hunter and Adams were each fined £20 plus costs for intoxication.

Spirited Community Chest Campaign Begins Soon

Campaign leaders and workers prepare for the large drive next week. On Monday night at the Methodist Church the executive committee will finalize plans for the active canvass starting Tuesday. A dinner at 4 30 p.m. Monday will motivate captains and workers as meetings continue daily. The Women’s Division lists Mrs Artemas Beebe as chair and includes Mrs J H Hurst and Mrs Charles among the organizers.

Portano Seized in Minnesota Slaying Case

Leonard Portano, suspected killer of four, was jailed in Bemidji Minnesota after being tracked to a straw stack near Kelliher. Sheriff J R Johnson said Portano sought to plead guilty to the murders as manhunters faced a lynch threat from a posse before his arrest.

Premier Refining Purchases Elyria Plant for Expansion

The Premier Refining and Manufacturing Co of Cleveland buys the Elyria Steel Products Co plant south of the Elyria Iron and Steel Co site on Massey Avenue, including buildings and five acres. They will move in promptly, lease the fifth floor of the Lorain County Savings and Trust Co building as offices, and plan to manufacture greases and paint with about fifty new local jobs.

Forbes Cleared of Hospital Contract Responsibility

Colonel Edward S. Walton testified before the Senate veterans bureau inquiry that Colonel Charles R. Forbes bore no responsibility for hospital contract awards. Walton said the army quartermaster corps and navy bureau of yards and docks handled awards while Forbes merely approved recommendations. He disputed Mortimer's charges of bid irregularities at American Lake and Northampton. The inquiry expanded to expose rumors of personal indiscretions, overshadowing graft allegations against Forbes.
