Explosions Rock Clarksfield as Propane Tank Fire Burns

A series of propane tank explosions at Northern Propane Gas Co near Clarksfield turned the site into an inferno injuring driver Alphonas Karhoff who was unloading gas. More than 100 firefighters fought the blaze in near freezing weather, keeping unexploded tanks cool as smaller tanks blew. The adjacent home of Conrad and Sarah Lucal burned, with family escaping, and nearby residences reported damage from heat and debris. Fire officials said about $300,000 in damages and disruption of telephone service occurred. Karhoff remained hospitalized in good condition.
