Public defenders costs rise as Minnesota imposes court fees
Alvin Hopkins faced a $50 fee for a court-appointed attorney or self representation on drunken driving charges. Minnesota and others shifted to fees up to $200 for felonies, aiming to fund indigent defense amid budget cuts. Critics warn fees threaten Gideon rights while supporters say they are a necessary compromise. Hopkins ultimately pleaded to avoid jail, paying a $150 fine and the $50 copay, plus other probation credits.
