At Edwards AFB California NASA officials praise the shuttle’s safe return after a 36 orbit mission. Astronauts Joe Engle and Richard Truly land Columbia at 1 23 p m PST after two days six hours thirteen minutes in flight. The crew calls the shuttle a magnificent flying machine and says the flight proves reusable space travel with the next mission planned for March. A 200000 strong crowd welcomes the ship home amid heat shield tile damage noted but far less than the first flight.
Authorities release a bank camera photo of a man who confronted a teller at First National Bank on Lake Avenue Griswold Road and fled with an undetermined cash amount. The FBI provided the image and asks for public assistance in identifying the suspect.
A US Senate subcommittee opened an investigation into crime syndicate links to the Hotel and Restaurant Workers Union, focusing on locals with many members in 12 cities including Cleveland. Subcommittee subpoenas target the union pension fund and mob influence in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, among others.
Rev. Charles W. Dahm’ s book paints Cardinal Cody as ambitious, paranoid and intelligent as he governs Chicago archdiocese through intimidation. The work cites 16 years of conflict and an FBI inquiry into possible use of $1 million in church funds.
