South African treason verdicts mark historic hang sentence

In Pietermaritzburg Judge Johan Hefer convicted 12 black militants of high treason. One defendant was sentenced to death, while the remaining 11 received 14 to 18 years in prison. The prosecutor had sought the death penalty for all defendants, first use of hang for treason in SA history.
