Legionnaires bacteria live long in water say researchers
Biologists at the International Symposium on Legionnaires Disease report legionella can persist long in tap water. Dr Peter Skally of the National Center for Disease Control cites survival of four strains up to 369 days in tap water and over 408 days in some tests. He notes rapid die off in cooling tower water due to water treatment agents. Researchers also discuss vaccine prospects with mouse studies showing protective immunity.
