North Olmsted mayor vetoes I 480 rezoning
Mayor Ed Boyle vetoed a 1.7 acre rezoning from residential to mixed use near I 480 and Columbia Road. Council 4-2 vote followed a 1,000-name residents petition against “rampant commercialism.” Biskind Development owns the parcel and eyed a multi story office complex. The veto can be overridden by five votes. a veto stands requires planning to restart.

North Ridgeville to hire negotiator for firefighter talks
The North Ridgeville City Council Administrative Committee met with Cleveland law firms to decide which will represent the city in upcoming firefighter contract negotiations. Council likely will choose between Squires, Sanders & Dempsey or Johnson, Balazs and Angelo. Formal talks begin after the hire, with the current two year contract ending December 31 and 13 firefighters plus six officers covered. The council plans to act next week.

Oberlin College loses bid for summary judgment in discrimination suit
U S District Court Judge Alvin Krenzler in Cleveland denied Oberlin College's request for summary judgment in the racial discrimination case filed by former admissions director J Leon Washington. The judge left trial as the path to resolve issues with Washington at the center of the suit. Washington, now at Hamline University, alleges creation of a new post to dilute his authority and cites breach of contract emotional distress conspiracy and civil rights claims. The parties had limited settlement discussions, with a prior demand before filing but no substantive negotiations since.
