Supreme Court bars mayor as judge in minor offenses
The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 that a mayor cannot sit as a local judge for traffic and other minor offenses when impartiality could be compromised. The Monroeville Ohio case involved Clarence Ward fined $100 for failing to stop at a checkpoint and to show a license. Sixteen states still permit mayors to try and sentence municipal cases.
