Elyria High Football Season Ends With Five Wins
Elyria High finished the 1944 football season with five victories and four defeats under Coach Ike Trubey. The team beat Lorain 20 to 0 in the annual classic, while other highlights included returning players and plans for next year as 12 seniors depart and reserves move toward varsity. A Canton McKinney Massillon game at Massillon was a complete sellout, and several school banquets and booster club meetings were announced for upcoming weeks.

Football Cannot Be Blamed For Death Of UW Player
Big Ten athletic commissioner Maj. John Griffith said football cannot be blamed for Allen Shafer’s death after a fatal injury in the Wisconsin Iowa game. He argued the accident involved no factor from the game or youth, noting older players often sustain worse injuries and citing Purdue’s Dr. Floyd Eastwood’s survey that Shafer was the first Big Ten football fatality in 121 years.
