Appellate Judge Perry Stevens of Akron told a victory banquet at Elk’s Hall that the Democratic win imposes duties on the party and the president. He warned Congress will pursue urgent policies while urging adherence to the Constitution and support for social security.
Five Cleveland residents including Joseph Martinez and Lily Wowandowski faced police court charges for possession of narcotic weed after multi state investigations into marijuana trafficking. Lorain and Detroit detectives traced suppliers while Mexican colony raids yielded no evidence.
San Francisco, Nov 13. Maritime workers charge shipowners with subversive acts and seek a maritime commission inquiry into alleged iron fist policies. Leaders warn of a fight to a finish if federal efforts fail to secure a settlement as 40,000 unionists strike. Prices rise and staple shortages appear along the Pacific coast.
Ohio forecast calls for fair conditions tonight with increasing warmth by Saturday as high temps rise across the state. A light breeze and no precipitation expected through the weekend.
Elyria’s Eighteen Chest teams with 127 workers plus 18 captains await the signal for the annual Community Chest drive. Opening dinner at First M. E. Church will be addressed by Bishop James A. McFadden as 9 men’s teams and 9 women’s teams begin canvassing, with the drive running to November 24.
Elyria schools will take an active role in the Community Chest drive opening next Monday night. Helen Crehore, head of the schools division, announced plans after a meeting at Elyria High School. Hundreds of students are expected to write jingles and draw posters urging Elyrians to support the drive which aims for 5 286. Trade school and high school students will also contribute art and financial support to the campaign.
Community Chest campaign officials extended an invitation to all interested to attend the opening dinner at the First M. E. Church at 6 30 p m Monday. Bishop James McFadden auxiliary of the Cleveland Diocese will give the opening address. A musical program directed by Lawrence Webber Jim Armitage and Jack Flynn will be presented. Reservations due by Saturday by calling 2139 or 3345. Tickets 50 cents.
Fourteen Elsria women are chosen to head a drive at the Y M C A workers report luncheon on Monday November 25. They will collect contributions posters and jingles in local schools as part of the campaign ahead of the vote.
Eleven year old Della Dehaven confessed she invented the tale of a man showing a woman's head to excuse tardiness. Investigators described her as sticking to the story through nine sessions before admitting the fabrication.
Three men blew open the M. J. Walters General Store in Spencer at 2 30 pm this afternoon, entering through the front door after dimming the square lights. They escaped in a stolen blue Chevrolet with about 466 to 500 dollars, causing 735 dollars in damages and stock loss. Sheriff Kruben of Medina county leads the investigation.
Nationalist and Loyalist planes clashed above Madrid in the first aerial battle over a world capital. The official communique claimed six Nationalist planes shot down and two Loyalists lost as Loyalists launched a dawn offensive along the Madrid front. About 1.2 million residents witnessed the half hour fight.
In Columbus on November 13 Henry J Berrodin head of the state division of aid for the aged announced pensions will rise to reflect higher living costs. The $25 monthly average stays the same statewide but Cleveland Akron and Toledo will see higher payments while rural areas with lower costs will see reductions after a study of living costs in 75 of Ohio's counties.

A gasoline train crashed into a brick-loaded truck at a private grade crossing in Barrington Rhode Island. The collision killed the truck driver and injured or shaken 29 railroad passengers and trainmen.
Elyria Memorial Hospital superintendent Frank W. Hoover notes no operations are scheduled for Friday. He says it is highly unusual and cites no remembered prior day without at least one operation, leaving the operating room a complete blank for the date.
Reese Bailey a 30 year old federal public enemy and bank robber was shot and wounded by ten G men and two local officers at daybreak when he fled from a farmhouse near Jackson. He had tried to escape firing a .45 pistol and was found with two leg wounds. He and his family had been living there two months under guard while authorities pursued him.
Nineteen officers for the coming year will be installed by Rollin E. Hinkson Post 3541 Veterans of Foreign Wars at an installation ceremony tonight in Woodmen's Hall. Commanders and officers named include Clarence C. Locke as commander Burt F. Barron as senior vice commander Philip Dunaitshik as junior vice commander Melvin Jack Brown Syr as adjutant and publicity chairman Arthur Perkins as quartermaster Clyde William Clapp as chaplain and Walter B. Murbach Giles L. Bar and William Stieterwald. The installation, directed by Clyde Clapp, will be followed by an Armistice Day banquet at the Ridgeville Grange Hall with Dan B. Symons as speaker.
Workmen at the Bender Body Co. plant repair and replace hundreds of broken windows from the former Willys Overland facility. The project includes steam and electrical system repairs and interior renovations as manufacturing operations expected to begin around January first.

De Witt Huffman from Columbus, educational director of the Ohio State Federation of Labor, spoke to Elyria’s Central Labor Union about state and national labor laws. He presented charts on laws enacted and proposed and noted organized labor’s role in initiating much current legislation. He also discussed industrial conditions, production and profit distribution, and his recommendations for action.
In Pearl River Louisiana Mrs. Louis Crawford confessed she lied about a big black dog delivering a baby from scrub pine to her. Neighbors doubted her claim while officials moved the infant to a New Orleans hospital and authorities seek truth.
A United Press survey shows more than a million workers will gain wage and salary boosts totaling over 130 million dollars in the coming year. Increases spread from Chicago packers to steel, auto, textile, education, and public utilities, with major firms like United States Steel, Chrysler, General Motors, and Standard Oil announcing raises and bonuses.
About 300 employees of the United Engineering and Foundry Co in Canton will share in a wage increase retroactive to November 1. The new schedule sets the minimum wage for apprentice learners at 35 cents per hour with raises for workers who had been earning the minimum.
