Floodwaters rush over Sandfiddler Road in Virginia Beach on Sunday after fierce weekend winds along the Atlantic Coast. The storm is not as destructive as Halloween weekend but causes fresh disruption across the region.

Secretary of State James A. Baker III urged the United States Japan China and the Soviet Union to halt a nuclear arms race on the Korean peninsula. He warned North Korea may be closer to nuclear capability than thought and pressed Japan to broaden its global role while noting a large U S trade deficit with Japan driven by autos. Baker spoke in Tokyo and prepared to travel to Korea for an economic meeting.
A Newsweek Chrysler Survey found 76 percent of 792 parents unaware of national and state education goals. Only 7 percent could name any goal, with optimism for 2000 limited to one of six goals, chiefly improved competency tests in core subjects. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus.
On NBC Meet the Press former Gov Edwin Edwards and David Duke argued over Duke s ties to the American Nazi Party and Edwards gambling, with both denying accusations and defending their backgrounds. Elyria observes Veterans Day marking 72 years since the war to end all wars began with Desert Storm adding a fifth group of veterans. AMVETS Post 32 joined VFW and American Legion to sponsor a dinner for about 250 attendees aiding some 75 handicapped veterans at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. Norm Heldt of VFW Post 1079 stressed the need to remember veterans who outlive families and rely on these organizations for support.
A car rear ended a parked tractor-trailer on the Ohio Turnpike east of Elyria at about 8 am. One man died and two others, all believed military in clothing, were injured and flown by two MetroHealth helicopters to Cleveland’s trauma center with head injuries. The truck driver slept as the impact occurred.
Cleveland rookie Eric Turner returns a Jim McMahon pass 42 yards for a touchdown to push the Browns to a 10-0 lead at Stadium. The Browns surge to 23-0 before Philadelphia storms back to win 32-30. Bud Carson tied to Browns revenge arc.
