Maritime Strikes Tie Up Shipping Across Coasts
East and west coast shipping halted by widespread labor action led by AFL and CIO longshore unions. About 6,500 AFL longshoremen in Philadelphia joined the New York and Boston wildcat strike, threatening 45,000 ILA workers coastwide unless a higher wage offer is settled. Pacific coast talks faltered as CIO and independent longshoremen and seafarers remain on strike, with tensions over a 30 cent raise and onetime loyalties. The liner America and the Taurus ships face delays as vessels idle or divert due to the walkouts.
