Yemeni trio held in plot to kill Nixon

A Yemeni father Ahmed Rageh Namer 46 and son Abdo Ahmed Namer 20 were arrested in Brooklyn in a conspiracy to murder President elect Richard Nixon. Police seized an M1 rifle a carbine and 20 to 25 shells. Hussin Namer 20 fled but was taken into custody later. Detains include two knives and a carving knife. The Secret Service confirmed arrests as warrants were served.

Quake rattles 23 states with regional damage

A strong earthquake centered near Mt Carmel Illinois rattled 23 states in the eastern half of the nation. The tremor, about 5.5 on the Richter scale, caused chimneys to topple and windows to shatter with two reported injuries in St. Louis.

Severe Midwest quake rattles several cities and causes damage

Agnew to share White House staff and offices

Nixon announced an expanded role for Agnew in the administration with a joint White House office and staff. Agnew will speak through the White House spokesman and work through White House channels. Nixon ruled out any European trip before the January 20 inauguration, and noted he had replied to Thieu about visiting South Vietnam only if Johnson viewed it as in the negotiations’ interest.

U.S. Ambassador Bunker met with President Thieu amid talk Thieu may ease his hard line on peace talks with the Communists. Thieu proposed a table plan giving Viet Cong and North Vietnamese contrasting positions and refused Paris participation until representation is clarified.

Air Cav redeployed to Saigon area to counter threat

UPI reports the 1st Cavalry Division air mobile, about 19 000 men, moved to the Saigon area to counter a substantial threat of spring offensive in jungles 50 to 100 miles from Saigon. South Vietnamese estimates of 60 000 North Vietnamese troops were disputed by U S commanders who put the figure at 36 000. The division and its helicopters and tanks head into three provinces from bases in the north.

U S vows forceful rescue of downed pilots in North Vietnam

The United States says it will use any means necessary to rescue reconnaissance pilots downed in North Vietnam during a bombing halt. Suppressive fire would target anti aircraft batteries, machineguns and ground troops hindering rescues. Air to ground cannon rockets and possibly bombs could be used.
