President Eisenhower said the United States should provide fighter escorts to protect American military planes on missions near dangerous areas. He endorsed the strict protest to Moscow over the shooting down of an American B 29 by Soviet fighters off northern Japan, defending the right of the plane to fly the area.
Cincinnati reports say Sen. Thomas A. Burke seeks a ballot recount after a close loss to Republican George H. Bender. His campaign manager Joseph Sullivan cites widespread irregularities and hints at possible state or federal intervention rather than a strict recount.
President Eisenhower submitted the Manila pact to the Senate to guard against Communist aggression in the Pacific and urged early favorable consideration. The eight nation treaty calls for defense against armed attack and internal subversion and includes economic cooperation among free nations in the strategic region.
U S Senator Burke considers asking to recount about 200 precincts after a delayed vote in Tinnali. If the tally remains with no clear results, he may quit. He met Tuesday with Michael DiSalle of Toledo, a former mayor and 1954 Democratic senatorial candidate. Some peers discuss a 1956 gubernatorial bid, while Burke, appointed by Gov. Lausche, vows to retire if he loses to Render.
Police hunt for two well dressed gunmen who escaped with more than 33,000 after robbing a newly opened Central National Bank of London Ohio branch in West Jefferson. They forced assistant cashier Robert Rowe to fill a bag with cash while leaving about 340,000 untouched in a rear vault.
Mrs. Clarence Shamel about 65 of Gnadenhutten died in a two vehicle collision west of Unrichlsville when a car crossed paths with a tractor trailer. Two others suffered injuries in the Tuesday crash.
Sen. Arthur W. Watkins argued before the Senate that the six member committee’s unanimous recommendation to censure Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy rested largely on uncontroverted evidence. McCarthy defended that the committee’s findings did not compel acceptance of the censure. The chamber held a special session as readings of the report began.

The Lorain County Agricultural Society plans a 1955 expansion including two $250 scholarships for a boy and a girl at the Aug 22–26 county fair. Proposals include five new buildings at the fairgrounds and a junior achievement premium list, with meetings set to finalize costs and elect officers at the Dec. 14 year-end gathering.
An 11 year old friend of Carolyn Waz ilewski was held for questioning in the brutal slaying of a two year old Baltimore girl. The body was found Tuesday on Pennsylvania Railroad tracks. Police quoted the youth as saying he had a date with Calvin but she did not keep it. He denied knowledge of the slaying.
Leonard R. Delong of Brean, 72, was held for the Medina County Grand Jury on charges connected to a fatal two-truck collision on RL 8 near Litchield. Delong’s car struck a truck that veered into another driven by Myland Overmeyer of Fremont, who was fatally injured. The traffic analyst said Delong apparently fell asleep at the wheel.

Washington AP Republicans on the Senate House Atomic Energy Committee voted 10 to 8 to defeat a Democratic move to table the Dixon-Yates power contract. President Eisenhower defended the deal as best for future TVA needs, while AEC chairman Strauss aims to sign it soon. The plan would buy 600,000 kilowatts from Dixon-Yates for a $107.25 million plant at West Memphis, Arkansas, to feed TVA.
An 18 month old child initially diagnosed with polio in Lorain County is now diagnosed with meningitis by Dr. Marion Fisher. The patient is on the Cleveland Hospital danger list with fair condition. Patricia Logar, nine, in iron lung at Cleveland Hospital from polio, left arm and leg paralyzed, listed as poor. County polio cases total 44, with 12 from Lorain, seven from Elyria, 25 from other areas. 38 percent of county cases last year.
A Bay Village mayor testified he urged Dr. Sam Sheppard to confess if guilty and recalled urging him on a friendship basis after the July murder of Marilyn Sheppard. The witness described asking Sam Sheppard to reveal the truth, noting the six to five a.m. murder time and related statements from the defense and police.
Wellington insiders say two major parties discuss a possible U S hydrogen testing base in the Antarctic. If confirmed, the cabinet will review the issue soon after this Saturday's general election.
