Winds delay Mars Global Surveyor launch at Cape Canaveral
NASA delayed the Mars Global Surveyor liftoff due to high winds and late-the-day complications. Officials plan a midday Thursday attempt on the Delta rocket for a 435 million mile, 10 month journey to Mars. If not launched by November 25, the mission must wait two years for proper Mars alignment. The probe, largely built from Mars Observer parts, aims for a September 1997 arrival and a six month mapping phase in a 235 mile orbit with six science instruments.

Bus heist: Maryland man steals transit bus and flees
Dewane E. Rickman, 42, reportedly took a Maryland Mass Transit Administration bus from a maintenance yard and led police across Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia for about three hours. The chase ended when the bus crashed near Garrisonville, Virginia. Virginia state police cited damaged cruisers and tires as officers attempted to stop the vehicle. Rickman, jailed without bond, faces grand larceny, eluding police, and reckless driving charges and extradition to Maryland is sought. He lacks a valid driver’s license and was already wanted in Baltimore County on prior offenses. A preliminary extradition hearing is set for December 3.
