Farm Bureau urges use of gasohol to aid corn market
Ohio Farm Bureau leaders told farmers at Lorain County Landmark dinner at Firelands High School that gasohol, a 10 percent ethanol fuel blend, could boost demand for corn. Larry Baughman cited a South Point plant producing ethanol from 25 million bushels annually. GM and 17 other automakers reportedly back gasohol as safe. The Landmark cooperative would need investment in storage and plumbing to supply farmers with gasohol for tractors, with only 8 of 53 respondents positive in a recent survey.

Lorain County has been awarded a 59070 state litter prevention grant to fund comprehensive programs. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is distributing 6 million dollars to 87 communities to curb litter through cleanups enforcement education awareness containers and expanded recycling.

Inmate roughed up four Lorain police officers
Four Lorain police officers were roughed up in a jail scuffle with a 32 year old inmate who refused to enter his cell. Two officers were slightly injured, one had clothing ripped and another had a watch destroyed. The inmate was arrested at St Joseph Hospital around 10 pm for disturbance and fighting with guards. The man faced multiple charges including assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Akron slayings case moves to nonjury trial for Cooey
A 19 year old Akron man charged in the deaths of Dawn McCreery and Wendy Offredo will waive a jury and stand trial before a three judge panel. Richard Cooey faces 13 counts including four aggravated murder with death penalty specs and multiple rape and kidnapping charges. Trial set for November 12 in Summit County Common Pleas Court.

Cascade pupil hurt on his way home
Elyria six year old Zayon Johnson of 130 Erie Street was struck by a car on West River Street near Bath Street while leaving Cascade School at 4 p.m. He suffered a broken leg. Driver Melissa Gillmore, 27, of North Ridgeville, was not charged. Johnson was with classmates when another boy apparently jostled him after a rock throwing incident.
