Democratic Mayor Michael B. Keys won 57 percent in a three way race with Republican Jo Ann Eichenlaub and independent Howard Carr. He carried 7,438 votes to 5,009 for Eichenlaub and 642 for Carr, amid a defeated 0.25 percent income tax proposal for the Police Department by 53 to 47 percent.

Lorain County Voters Reject New School Taxes in Landslide

Voters across Lorain County rejected six of seven new school tax requests on Tuesday while approving all seven renewal or replacement levies. In Lorain, an 8.5 mill five year levy failed 56 to 44 percent, and a 7.1 mill replacement levy passed 56 to 44 percent. Firelands District saw the largest defeat as a 0.75 percent income tax for schools failed 60 to 40. Black River district approved a five year 8.95 mill levy by 957 to 908. Replacements passed in Avon, Columbia, Keystone, Oberlin and Lorain County Joint Vocational School districts.

GOP picks up an Elyria Council seat in Ward 6

Casey Turton reports Republicans gained a third seat on Elyria City Council as Gerald Hammond defeated 12 year incumbent Gordon Meadows in Ward 6. Close races emerged in Wards 3 and 7 with Maurita Ferguson and Kenneth Burkhard defeating GOP challengers. At large seats went to Shirley Guinta Leo Bullocks and Jack Baird, with Bender a former at large councilman. Incumbents won remaining races including Robert McFrederick.
