Moldavia orders militias to disband after crisis speech
Moldavia's parliament ordered all militias to disband within 24 hours after President Mircha Snegur urged lawmakers to review laws fueling ethnic unrest in the republic. The move follows talks with Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow on a moratorium, while a softened language law could replace the 1995 Moldavian requirement for Moldavian fluency in many jobs. Separatists in the Gagauz and Dniester regions may suspend autonomy declarations and elections as Kremlin troops were sought for help after an August Gagauz autonomy move.
