Lorain school board plans to skip the February ballot and may push a levy to May after a defeat. Members urge community feedback before resubmission and warn of potential massive cuts, including 100 layoffs and program cuts to arts and athletics, to limit harm to students.
Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Raymond Ewers ruled that Ricardo Punsalan must stay in a mental health institution after a two year review. The 37 year old, found not guilty by reason of insanity in his father Ernesto Punsalan's 1994 stabbing death, remains medicated though shows progress and occasional bursts.
State Rep. Joe Koziura carried Lorain and several communities he represented but fell short. Tom Williams, a Republican newcomer from Amherst, won the post to replace Betty Blair in January. Williams carried Amherst and the cities of Avon Avon Lake North Ridgeville and Vermilion and was the top vote getter in all county villages.
Elyria voters rejected a police levy on Tuesday, likely ending the levy for at least two years. Mayor Bill Grace, 11 City Council members face re election in 2011, reducing chances of a new tax proposal before November elections. The city charter requires eight council votes to place a tax issue on the ballot. Grace said getting the necessary eight votes was already difficult.
About 1,100 Grafton residents will lose power 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday for a 69 kilovolt switch repair caused by last week’s storms. If Tuesday rains, work moves to Thursday. Omega Edison and village officials say the weekday outage minimizes downtime.
