Columbus voters soundly defeated two proposed constitutional amendments funded with over 6 million dollars. Issue 1, backed by large out of state insurers for workers compensation, lost 4 to 1 and carried no counties, prompting Democratic calls to curb campaign finance.
With 92 percent of precincts reporting, Ohio voters kept the 68 year old workers compensation system and rejected the proposed redistricting method. Issue 1, private workers compensation, failed 79 to 21 percent, while Issue 2 lost 59 to 41 percent. Supporters stressed education on the subjects amid corporate contributions backing Issue 2 and insurance groups backing Issue 1.
The Elyria Democratic Party captured all four at large council seats and increased total seats with a net gain. Shirley Guinta placed second among eight contenders with 6 751 votes, while incumbents Leo Bullocks Richard Seward and Arthur Weber won the other three citywide seats. Seward led with 7 277 votes. Republicans only won two wards, with Reichard and Brewer taking Ward 4 and Ward 3 respectively.
Election index highlights include Swietyniowski winning in North Olmsted moral majority candidates losing in Berea and gains for N Olmsted GOP council seat. Lorain and Wellington races shape regional politics with levy battles and new council members noted.
The forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies tonight with a 40 percent rain chance and lows near 50. Thursday brings showers and a high in the low 60s with a 70 percent rain probability.
The Columbia mission with astronauts Joe Engle and Richard Truly is postponed due to oil pressure abnormalities in the auxiliary power units. Launch control spokesman Hugh Harris says it will be at least 48 hours before a new schedule is set, depending on repairs, with launch director George Page making the postponement decision at 9:40 am EST.
In Lorain County the 25 mill mental retardation operating levy (Issue 3) was defeated 38 300 to 26 469. Oberlin approved while Elyria and Lorain rejected. Board chair Jo Huber and Superintendent Ellen Payner vow to consider a June or November rerun and program cuts amid funding shortfalls and state federal cuts.
Sonya Mareno and Bonnie Repas, both first time candidates, win two open seats on the Elyria Board of Education. Mareno tops with 5,628 votes and carries Ward 1 by 768, while Repas gains 4 of 7 wards with 5,586 votes and joins her husband as the first married couple on the board.
The Ohio Medical Board postponed ruling on the revocation of Lorain County osteopath Leonard Faymore due to late notification to his attorney. Hearings in 1980 charged Faymore with dispensing dangerous drugs without proper examinations at Doctors Clinic Eaton Township and a Greenwich clinic. The investigation involved undercover agents and a Chronicle Telegram reporter.
