Judge rejects Ohio McGovern request to extend polling hours
District Court Judge Frank J. Battisti refused to extend polling hours beyond 6 30 p m citing no federal jurisdiction to order longer voting. McGovern supporters argued possible rights violations due to high turnout and inadequate facilities. Battisti urged sufficient paper ballots and warned against voter discouragement from lines. He noted past concerns in May with machine breakdowns and long lines and left open potential action if constitutional violations occur.

Man receives two life terms in Cleveland murder
Carl W. Johnson, 22, of Cleveland, sentenced by Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court to two life terms plus one day of solitary confinement and one day of hard labor each month for the first degree murder of Frederick Ceccarelli, 58, of Seven Hills. Ceccarelli’s body was dismembered and dumped in a Mentor car after being killed on August 15. Judge Patton called it a vicious crime.
