The ledger shows Taft and Metzenbaum leading in Senate contests with large margins, while several state and local positions list varied tallies. Notable figures include Rogers Cloud, John Gilligan, Edwin Lawton, and Robin Turner among others, with races spanning auditor, treasurer, and court seats.
In Elyria High School about 80 classrooms met with administrators to review grievances from both student groups. A group of 35 to 40 white students gathered prior to the meeting to protest handling of black students' issues. Principal Miller urged the crowd back to class, and the white group dispersed quietly. White students complained of two standards for punishment and tardiness.
Republican Charles A Mosher of Oberlin defeated Dr Joseph Bartolomeo by more than 30 000 votes to secure a sixth term as US representative from Ohio s 13th district Final returns show 85 802 for Mosher and 33 358 for Bartolomeo The vote covered Lorain Cuyahoga Medina and other counties with Mosher carrying all four districts including Medina county.
Elyria residents voted 8 116 against and 7 311 for a 65 mill operating levy, with wards three and five alone supporting it. Officials warned the defeat may force school cuts and possible closure in 1972, delaying any new revenue until 1972 at earliest.
Republican Robert Taft Jr defeats Howard Metzenbaum to claim the US Senate seat, giving Ohio two Republicans in the Senate for the first time since 1957. Democrat Gilligan wins the governorship by a wide margin, carrying most of the Democratic state ticket. Cloud and other Republicans suffer in the statehouse loan scandal shadow.
Democratic incumbent Jeresmo J Keron defeats Republican Nicholas Grubic for a four year term, 34 929 to 29 409, carrying Lorain city 11 235 to 8817 and winning broad majorities in Avon Elyria North Ridgeville Oberlin and Sheffield Lake. He championed a 3 million county administration building as first step toward a new jail and courthouse improvements.
Voters frown on added school funds while approving several small local levies and renewals. Eight school levies failed. four new and five renewal levies passed overall, with some lumped measures defeated. Countywide measures on mental health and retardation were rejected, sewer and recreation bonds failed, and officials elected reflected the state trend as a dozen names appear.
Lorain County voters chose Atty Henry T Webber to the domestic relations bench, defeating Avon Lake Municipal Judge Webber 33. The younger candidate, longtime Democratic activist, succeeds his retiring father Judge Henry P Webber and becomes the county's youngest common pleas judge. The winner faces Ohio’s 70 year age limit rule and will serve a six year term with a $26 008 salary.
Cloudy conditions persist with possible showers today and tonight. Highs around the 40s, lows in the mid to upper 30s. Details on page B-7.
Lorain County voters defeated a 5 mill levy for mental health and a 1 mill levy for mental retardation. The 5 mill measure lost 31 575 to 28 152 and the 1 mill measure fell 32 25873. Backers blamed tax fatigue and ballot confusion while noting the plan to run both levies together was dropped.
