Immigration Assimilation Gains Seen in Southern California Study
A USC demographer-led study of immigrants in Southern California from 1980 to 1990 finds faster upward mobility and language gains than commonly assumed. It shows Latino youths rising from 33 percent English proficiency in 1980 to 70 percent by 1990 and poverty among young Asian men dropping from about 33 percent to 6 percent by 1990. The research highlights faster progress for immigrants from Asia and Europe compared with Latinos, and notes younger immigrants under 45 assimilate more quickly.

Diabetes rate in U S rises to three percent
New York study shows over 3 percent of Americans have diabetes, up from 11 million in 1983 to about 16 million today. Eastman of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases cites aging, obesity, minority population shifts, and rising minority percentages as key factors. Black and Mexican American rates near 9.6 percent, Japanese Americans 15 to 20 percent, and American Indians around 50 percent.
