Across multiple communities including Amherst Avon Lake Lorain and Elyria voters shift power in mayoral races with Reichlin Zahorec and Davis among outcomes. School levies pass or fail in varied patterns. several towns elect newcomers to boards and councils while bonds face mixed fortunes.
Incumbent Leonard P. Reichlin defeats GOP challenger Andrew J. Foreman Jr. by 875 votes to secure a third consecutive Elyria mayoral term. Reichlin carried most wards, with Foreman winning only the third ward and emphasizing street safety in his campaign.
Residents of the Elyria city school district may submit names for the new high school and junior high. A ballot with options appears on page 8 following coverage on page 7 in The Chronicle Telegram.

The Elyria city school district defeated the 4.5 mill operating levy 8160 to 7126 and the 2 mill capital improvements levy 8382 to 6861. The operating levy would have raised 1.125 million. improvements would fund 500000 annually for five years and help ease severe overcrowding.
Lorain Countians approved all nine school renewal levies and six municipal renewals while defeating both school bonds and a single municipal bond. Voter turnout reached a record high in off year elections with 71,040 of 102,223 registered casting ballots. Uncertainty over state education aid influenced results with only LaGrange Township fire protection levy passing.
Democrat Joseph Zahorec defeated incumbent Woodrow Mathna by 14 787 to 9 245 in a decisive Lorain mayoral election. Voter turnout reached 77.2 percent with 24 903 ballots cast, a city record. Zahorec cited a mandate for change while Mathna lamented stalled projects.
