Ramie fiber machine could change Southern farming
Hammond engineers Roland French develops a ramie fiber separator to replace costly hand processing. If successful, ramie could replace cotton, with a single planting yielding long lasting fabric and overalls that last decades. Ramie resists pests, grows six to eight feet, and requires modest annual maintenance. Experimental plots show 1,300 pounds of fiber from three tons of stalks, promising a durable, home-grown textile future for Southern farmers.
