Hijacked United jet returns from Cuba with hostages

A swarthy Mexican American hijacker seized a United Airlines 727 en route from San Diego to Los Angeles, forced it toward Cuba, then returned to the U.S. with six crew and six passengers after a six hour ordeal in Havana. The hijacker, identified as L. Rosas, cited Cuba as the target and showed a brown beret with three lions. He endangered a stewardess and two other crew by repeatedly pressing the pistol to them, including his own two children aboard. Cuban authorities disarmed him on arrival in Havana and he and his family disembarked.

Nine Die in Two Midair Collisions of Light Planes

Two in flight crashes near Seattle and Missoula killed nine people. In Missoula a two passenger plane collided with a larger craft carrying the University of Montana Silver Tip Sky Diving Club. five aboard died, one survived, and a second survivor bailed out but was found dead. In Seattle four perished when a light plane lost a wing and crashed while the second aircraft landed safely at Boeing Field. Names include James Ledbetter, William La Fleur, Judy Barrett, Marcia Kantorwicz, Bob Lueck, Clayton Lesley, Nicholas W Cody, George Romanack, Don Cody, and Howard Cody. Debris scattered over rooftops. FAA termed the smaller plane mystery. possible third plane sighting under investigation.

School levy on ballots questions bus transport plans

Elyria may drop sewer project due to state action

Elyria may abandon the 800000 Northwest Sanitary Sewer Project if the state requires immediate elimination of combination sewers. Councilman Fauver says the city cannot finance both projects, fearing the state may force a stop. Officials note the move could jeopardize 49 million dollars in construction and federal aid for sewers remains pending in Chicago.

Cardinal Cushing Seriously Ill In Boston Area

Cardinal Richard Cushing, 75, is described as in critical condition due to complications from a long standing malignancy. He stepped down as Boston archbishop last September after 26 years, with Humberto Medeiros succeeding him. An archdiocesan spokesman said he is being treated at home and his condition has been failing rapidly.
