Washington report notes that John R. Steelman directs the OPA decontrol program, not Paul A. Porter. Porter declined to say if he will stay, while aides expect him to likely remain to see the fight through as decontrol advances and wholesale orders flow.
The article recounts Steelman overruling Porter on decontrol policy for a second time, wiping out an OPA textile order led by southern congressmen aimed at slowing cotton purchases. Earlier, Steelman ordered decontrol of shoes hides and leather, to the complete surprise of QODPA.
Edward C. Harr formerly assistant general manager at American Radiator has become partner with Earl Jolley and his son Earl Jr. in the Electrical and Mechanical Service Co. at 600 West Street. The trio formed a partnership as of Nov 1 with Harr as general manager. The Jolley lineage started the business 27 years ago and now runs a plant offering electrical repair and a general machine shop.
COLUMBUS Ohio Public Ex penditures Council's Coordinating committee urged repeal of the one-cent a gallon liquid fuel tax the admissions tax and the 165 per cent utility tax. Dr David H Sutton said these were emergency measures and if future needs arise new taxes could be levied. The council also urged allocating more sales tax revenue to cities towns and other political subdivisions based on need for gasoline tax and vehicle license fee distributions for street and other services.
The Veterans Administration will open a Lorain contact office on Monday November 4 in Rooms 316 926 of the Broadway building at Erie avenue and Broadway. Raymond F Yunker will lead the office with two training officers John Cleak and W F Bettcher, both Lorain county workers. The office will operate daily 4 am to 445 pm except Saturdays 12 noon. expansion planned as need grows. Yunker a World War II veteran from Elyria will be in charge and lives with his wife on Grafton road.
Germany and Austria with the 157th Engineers Combat Battalion. He was discharged as a first lieutenant. Before entering the service he attended Notre Dame University and Elyria public schools. He is 28. Yunker has been with the VA since January 1948. He graduated from the contact representatives' school in Columbus and is in the contract department of the Cleveland regional office. The Lorain Contact Office is established to provide closer contact with veterans in northern Lorain county. Veterans seeking information about compensation or pension hospitalization insurance on the job training and education may visit the new VA office. Dependent of deceased veterans may also secure information about entitled benefits.
