Lorain County faces a 3.47 million deficit by year's end if the 0.5 percent sales tax fails, per the Blue Ribbon Committee. Eight of nine members signed, with two of three appointed by Commissioner Mary Jo Vasi voting yes. The report disputes calls for tax repeal without cuts.

Oberlin residents push toll free calling between Oberlin and Elyria to pressure changes. GTE district manager John Sobotincic says legislation is unnecessary and the PUCO controls calling areas. Stanley L. Labis, 72, former Stan's Market owner, collapsed in a Lorain Municipal Court office about 30 minutes after settling a bitter dispute with a neighbor who had chopped his cherry tree. He died at St. Joseph's Hospital later Thursday.
The Defense Department plans a gradual expansion of its accounting centers over the next decade and is considering sites near existing centers in Kansas City Washington Denver and Indianapolis but not Ohio. Elyria could gain 5000 to 10000 jobs and a 100 million payroll if its Fisher Guide plant on Lowell Street is approved. Local officials and Rep Donald Pease push Elyria’s bid while origin of the project remains fluid.
