Tidal wave disaster kills thousands in India and East Pakistan
A 16 foot tidal wave struck villages along the Bay of Bengal with winds up to 100 mph. Officials estimate 10,000 to 20,000 dead, potentially 15,000 to 20,000, with millions homeless as food drops and destroyed transportation networks hamper relief. The hardest hit areas were Cuttack and Balasore in Orissa, eastern India, amid ongoing cyclones threatening a subsistence region.
