Election battles loom across Lorain County ballots

Lorain County faces 426 candidates and 20 local option questions across 10 areas with 67 seats and 114 seeking millage. Voters decide on 75 issues including a $5.4 million high school bond and a countywide tuberculosis levy, plus rival mayoral contests in Elyria and Lorain and a heated North Ridgeville school board race. Showers threaten turnout though temperatures rise into the 60s.

Tidal wave disaster kills thousands in India and East Pakistan

A 16 foot tidal wave struck villages along the Bay of Bengal with winds up to 100 mph. Officials estimate 10,000 to 20,000 dead, potentially 15,000 to 20,000, with millions homeless as food drops and destroyed transportation networks hamper relief. The hardest hit areas were Cuttack and Balasore in Orissa, eastern India, amid ongoing cyclones threatening a subsistence region.

Name Elyria High and Junior High in local contest

The Chronicle Telegram invites readers to nominate names for Elyria’s new senior and junior high schools. Ballots mailed to the newspaper will determine the five finalists for each school, with a final vote by the public and a $50 savings bond prize for nominators.

Wilberforce University student slain in campus clash

A Wilberforce University freshman Mantel Crenshaw, 20, from Canton, Ohio was shot and killed after a melee between Wilberforce and Central State students near Brush Row Road. Detective Sgt. Sam Morgan said a confrontation started after a Central State movie night and egg throwing. Crenshaw died at Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia.

Two Belfast Policemen Die in Open Gunfire

Two plainclothes policemen were killed by two gunmen in a shop in Andersonstown Belfast in an IRA related attack. The incident raised the Northern Ireland death toll for the year to 111, including nine officers.

Filipino gunman frees hostages escapes by helicopter

A gunman captured a 14 year old American girl and three others, held them nine hours in a Manila home, then fled by helicopter to Zambales province. Police and guards watched as the helicopter, supplied by Manila Daily Star, ferried the group away after negotiations.
