Federal safety inspectors sought cooler conditions to enter the hot refinery area after a blast at Texas City Refining Inc. killed five. Fire crews continued foam application to nearby tanks as investigators delayed entry to determine the cause. Monroe Huebner, 49, was among the victims.
Seven explosions at the Texas City Refining Inc. plant sent orange fireballs 500 feet into the air early Tuesday. Firefighters fought the blaze into the afternoon, while a hospital official reported five fatalities and ongoing questions about the cause, with comments from a Don Gray of Amoco noting a new process unit being brought online may have sparked the disaster.
World War II figure Gagnon, 53, known for raising the flag on Iwo Jima, was removed from his post as night manager of a Manchester NH motel during Memorial Day weekend after giving a newspaper interview. The report notes the motel was closed one night and a couple suspected of an affair rented a room.
In Arkansas Democratic Senate primary Pryor leads with 34 percent as Thornton and Tucker contest second place. In North Carolina Democratic runoff John Ingram upset Luther Hodges Jr, ending Hodges stronger showing from the May 2 poll. Vote tallies show Pryor ahead by a slim margin with 90 percent counted and a resume set for the runoff.
Detroit court suit says Charles Stuart seeks reimbursement of more than 30000 dollars plus six percent interest from Wanda Pierce. He alleges a four year dating relationship led to a promised marriage and a verbal contract after he spent on a home down payment a 1975 station wagon and large sums of money. Pierce allegedly was married when the couple reached the altar point. In a separate item, a federal appeals court in St. Louis rules police may not use deadly force on a fleeing non-violent felony suspect Roy Lee Landrum was shot at a service station while attempting to break in.
