Political Battle in Base Major General Foreman Praises Lowden
In a letter to ex servicemen, Major General Milton J. Foreman, first commander of the American Legion, praised Frank O. Lowden as a presidential candidate. West Virginia Republican endorsement fields show Senator Guy D. Goff leading by about 7,000 votes over Torbert Troover. Governor Alfred E. Smith leads Democratic endorsement by about 5,000 over Senator James A. Reed. Senator Heflin of Alabama predicts Smith will fall short of the nomination by about 100 votes in Philadelphia. The Peoples Lobby led by John Dewey sent queries on foreign policy to six top candidates. Southern Women’s National Democratic organization endorses Smith. Wall Street brokers quote odds: Hoover 7-5, Lowden 4-1, Smith 8-1. Hull says Lowden would likely win in November if nominated. A Kansas City plan to mobilize 100,000 farmers as a political trick is denounced by former Governor Sam McKelvie.
