The Chronicle reports Lorain boxer Mike Griffith won a featured professional bout in Cleveland as part of a packed sports section.
Dennis Pintur, a 50 year old worker with 24 years at USS Kobe Steel, died after a dummy bar weighing about 30 tons slipped from a bloom caster while he tried to hook metal to a crane. The accident occurred around 2:50 a.m. in the bloom caster area with 12 to 15 coworkers nearby. Police say the machine was unlocked and the bar slipped out, despite a safety rule that the area be locked when a steel bar enters. Pintur had only five weeks in his present job.
Cosby plans a press conference with brothers Larry and Charles Dolan in Cleveland to express interest in buying the NFL replacement Browns. The Dolans and a family trust would own 30 percent each, Cosby 5 percent, with 5 percent held in reserve, as rumors place the price in the 250 to 300 million range.
Elyria Catholic High School honored 121 seniors at its 49th commencement in the Coliseum. Valedictorian Rachel Serazin urged classmates to believe in goals and work together to make many small changes that amount to changing the world. Salutatorian Erin Conlin echoed Emerson on pathways to success.
Elyria launches a campaign to fund a 25 minute Fourth of July display contracted to Melrose Pyrotechnics of Kingsbury Indiana at 25000 yearly. The firm will supply fireworks a sound system and stage with 5 million liability coverage. Donations are invited from businesses organizations and residents.
The Elyria High School band gathered on the Lorain County Courthouse steps for its annual Appreciation Concert drawing an enthusiastic crowd at Ely Square as baton twirlers performed on the ground.

Elyria reports the 1999 Mercury Cougar is now on Spitzer Auto World’s lot. Once produced with the Ford ThunderBird at Lorain Plant, the Cougar ends its older form and returns to its sporty roots for younger buyers.
