Salt Lake City UPS reports 19 month old Lisa and Elisa Hansen were successfully separated at University of Utah Medical Center after a 16 12 hour operation starting 10 45 a m MDT Tuesday and ending 3 05 a m MDT today. The twins awake and crying, stable but critical, with doctors proceeding to recovery. Eleven specialists performed the complex procedure, sharing duties and using magnifying glasses to separate brains within a shared skull cavity.
A Washington report notes Venus may host a mountain taller than Everest a plateau twice Earth’s largest and a canyon larger than any found in the solar system. Details appear on page A-2.
The FAA abruptly grounded 134 DC-10 jets triggering confusion at busy hubs including Chicago O'Hare and Los Angeles. Reservation lines jammed and passengers faced delays as inspections planned over three days per aircraft.
Ohio Senate blocked federal plans to use Lorain and 23 other counties as a national nuclear waste dump at least until 1983. The measure bars permanent storage of wastes in Ohio and frames a test of state sovereignty against federal authority.
