Gray Honors Unknown Rebel in Gray Maine Memorial Day

An unknown Confederate soldier buried among Northern troops lies in Gray Village Cemetery with a simple inscription STRANGER A Soldier of the late war died 1862 Erected by the Ladies of Gray. His body was shipped to Gray by mistake for Lt. Charles H. Colley and delays in travel led to his burial in Gray.

Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire Kills Hundreds in 1977

Baggers on federal payroll draw $12 million a year

Rep. Les Aspin says teens bagging groceries at military commissaries are now federal employees. The change, upheld by the Justice Department, bars tips and imposes salaries and fringe benefits, costing $12 million to $18 million annually and retroactive pay of $35 million to $53 million, potentially eliminating many bagger positions.

Tragedy at nightclub leaves hundreds trapped dead

Fire swept through a popular nightspot near the Ohio River killing hundreds as smoke blocked exits. Patrons 3,500 to 5,000 crowded corridors and rooms, many dying near exits or under tables. Deputy coroner cites panic and disoriented crowds hindering escape while crews fought the blaze atop a bluff.

Rhodes vetoes election day registration in Ohio bill

Gov. James A. Rhodes vetoed election day registration and two other controversial sections of the voter registration reform bill. He kept intact mail and door to door registration as well as statewide forms distributed by county officials. The vetoes target provisions for deputy registrar registrations and permanent citizen registration once recorded. Rhodes cited fraud concerns and said the changes will improve the election system.
