Tornado Devastation Leaves Joplin Area In Alarm and Loss

Survivors describe scene near the tornado path with overturned cars and destroyed buildings. Debris and gas fires filled streets as relatives hurried to locate missing loved ones and authorities activated disaster warnings. Tornado toll disputed as Missouri counts rise

Joplin City Manager Mark Rohr said the death toll climbed to at least 142 but was later revised to 139. State officials cited 126 deaths with morgue figures listing 142 remains, some from the same victims. If 139 holds, 2011 would be the deadliest year since 1950 with 520 tornado deaths.
