Balky draftees escape charges
The Justice Department dropped indictments against about 600 draft-age youths who violated Selective Service rules by refusing induction after their classifications or induction dates were changed. Administration will not seek new taxes this election year
A high ranking official said the Nixon administration will not propose additional taxes even if the federal deficit widens to billions. He noted the deficit could reach 10 to 15 billion without new tax raises and said action would depend on how far the budget slips into the red, as the stock market rose 20 points in a two day uptick. The Agriculture Department reported farm prices rose 0.93 percent for the May 15 period, with fruits and vegetables up while meats and eggs declined. The Labor Department added five metro areas to unemployment lists, bringing total to 16. The official stressed the economy remains sound overall but inflation fighting progress is behind schedule and unemployment is higher than expected.
