Surprising Homecoming Ends in Vietnam Helicopter Crash
Army Spc. Henry Dale Adkins, 19, of Lorain, an Admiral King High School grad and Lorain Ford worker, often surprised his family by showing up unannounced. He died at 20 when a helicopter he rode in was hit by ground fire over Kien Giang South Vietnam on May 23, 1971. His uncle escorted the body home, and Fern Adkins awaited his return despite the flag-draped coffin. The Adkins siblings, now in Lorain County, plan to attend the Amherst Vietnam Veterans Memorial opening in June.
