Berlin Sealed Off as East West Sectors Barred

Berlin tightens division as East German and Soviet authorities raise street barricades and clear a 375 mile no man’s land. 163 of 190 internal streets blocked. border guards dig trenches and set roadblocks along the 375 mile frontier with West Germany. The East German government vows a 1600 foot no man’s land with decisive shot on sight policy to take effect Sunday.

Lorain man killed in motorcycle crash on Pearl Road

John McMahon Jr. 23, of 1672 Elfreda Ave Lorain, died after his southbound motorcycle skidded at a curve and struck the front of Steve Janik’s car at 3 44 p m on Pearl Road. Janik 30 of Elyria said he stopped and that McMahon suffered a punctured lung and ruptured spleen. The county’s 28th traffic death this year.

Fund Helps Girls Pursuing Nursing Education

The Charity Sherod Memorial Fund offers financial aid to young women in Lorain County pursuing nursing careers or needing support to complete training. Miss Sherod, a 26 year Lorain County Health Department nurse, is honored by donations from friends across the state to sustain loans and scholarships. Theft Report From Chestnut Ridge Property

W F Winterfield reported to the sheriff that a water pump a box of glass cut to 14 by 20 inches putty 40 concrete blocks and 20 rolls of wallpaper were stolen from his Chestnut Ridge property near Lear Nagle Road yesterday.

New Transformer Installed At Redman Substation

A new transformer was installed at the Redman substation of Ohio Edison on Huron Street to replace a failed unit that cut power downtown and on the west side. Power was restored by 4 45 p m after the 10 50 a m outage and temporary load shifting from Sumner Street and Woodford Avenue substations. Utilities asked industries to curtail use during the emergency and a cable blowout on the Huron Street line later restricted west downtown power.

Fearful freighter missing after sinking in St Lawrence

A 600 ton freighter named B. F. with 11 aboard is missing and presumed sunk in the St Lawrence River. The iron hulled converted coal ship left St. Anne Des Monts May 13 bound for Three Rivers with pulpwood. debris and lifejackets were found along the south shore 250 miles northeast of Quebec City. Captain Charles Noel Bernier of Machin, Quebec, piloted the vessel under charter to the St. Lawrence Corporation of Three Rivers.

Busy Little Bee Triggers Costly Truck Crash

Henry Middleton of Massillon Ohio reported that a bee flying into his collar while driving west on Route 57 near Route 76 led to loss of control. His Union Line Clearance Co. truck struck a concrete bridge railing and had its front demolished.

New Home Planned For McGee Family Survivors

After a devastating fire that claimed two daughters and three relatives, the McGee family receives a pledged fund now around 16000 dollars. A 32 by 32 house with an 18 by 24 garage will be built on a Lot on Middle Ridge near Elyria Avenue Amherst for the three boys James 15 William 11 and John 7 months old son survived with relatives guiding the effort. A trustees board supervised the fund with Mrs Doris Jaycox David Goldthorpe and Fred Berger present as plans were laid out.

Rev Hamblen Leaves Elyria for Kentucky Pastor

The Rev E E Hamblen, 13 years at Second Methodist Elyria, is transferred to Scott Methodist in Maysville Kentucky. Rev George E Rice will replace him, coming from Cory Methodist Cleveland and serving previously in Chicago and New York. Rice, Army veteran, studied at Drew Seminary and Roosevelt College, and his wife Birdie and three children accompany him. He begins ministry in Elyria Sunday.
