A century later the No 123 trolley car driven by Charlie Frauendiener of Lakewood crashed into No 129 at Middle Avenue and Fifth Street after a distraction cited as a dog or a carcass on the roadside. The impact crushed 123 and left a bloody trail for 200 feet as both cars stopped. Witnesses described screams and a horrific, ground up wreck as rescuers worked.
After a deadly trolley crash in Elyria about 100 were injured and nine died, including 18 year old Homer Alten. His father funded Elyria Memorial Hospital and the Gates Hospital for Crippled Children, foundations that evolved into Easter Seals. Community leaders plan a historic marker at the crash site, with a meeting set for Wednesday.
