A tornado struck the passenger train Empire Builder near Moorhead Minnesota on May 27 1931. Of 117 aboard one person died and 57 were injured. Five 70 ton coaches were lifted from the track and one was carried 80 feet.
Severe thunderstorms moving east from Kentucky and Indiana into Tennessee left five dead and a missing 4-year-old. A Lexington woman died after a lightning strike. In Indiana a father and son were found drowned, with a grandfather missing. Two teens perished in Tennessee. two rescuers were injured. Power outages affected about 187000 Duke Energy customers in the region.
