Ship sinks to become Key West reef project
The decommissioned Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg will be sunk seven miles off Key West to form a large man made reef. Explosives will flood the hull and it will settle to about 140 feet depth in 3 minutes. The 17,000 ton vessel cost about 8.6 million dollars and is expected to draw divers and boost 8 million dollars yearly in tourism. Organizers say the reef will protect natural reefs and anchor a regional wreck network from Key Largo to Key West.
