Gary Gerrone, a naturalist and freelance writer, reflects on property stakes, deer, birds, and the inescapable laws of nature in residential yards. He notes that nature surrounds us, resists human control, and sometimes makes a mess as maples sprout in gutters and insects explore every crack.

Ethanol Drives IRL into Indy 500 Change
Indy Racing League will run the Indianapolis 500 with 10 percent ethanol this year and plans 100 percent ethanol next year. Bud Lazier notes the move could shift racing culture toward renewable fuel as studios, manufacturers, and fans watch the experiment unfold in the heartland. Ethanol, an alcohol fuel from corn and other crops, reduces emissions and can boost octane, though distribution and industry adoption remain challenges.
