Truman Urges Federal Aid to Education to Avert Crisis
President Truman told House Speaker Joseph W. Martin Jr that without federal aid for education the U.S. system faces serious breakdown. He urged Congress to follow Senate action approving a bill for education aid, citing a 360 million dollar 1949 budget proposal and arguing defense costs do not justify delaying aid. He said such assistance would strengthen democracy amid rising school costs and rapid population growth in many states.
